Our featured campaign this month is about cosmetic testing on animals in the US – read about it on our campaigns page. It’s an important issue. Animals all over the world are suffering unnecessarily as the result of painful, unethical and pointless experiments. Here’s a few more reasons why you should shop ethically and avoid products tested on animals.
Cosmetic testing on animals is cruel
Animals are sentient and can and do suffer. During experiments, animals are treated like lab equipment, kept in isolated, small cages and subjected to all sorts of painful procedures that lead to long-term suffering and death.
Cosmetic testing on animals is bad science
Animals are not humans, and they react differently to experiments and products. Therefore, results cannot be transferred reliably to humans – if it works on or is harmless to animals, that doesn’t mean it will work on or be safe for us. This means that countries waste billions of pounds on barbaric tests that don’t produce meaningful results, which is extremely wasteful.
Cosmetic testing on animals is unnecessary
Cosmetic testing on animals is banned in many countries including India, Israel, Norway and the European Union (EU). Yet, cosmetic products are still tested without a problem, just using cruelty-free methods. It is possible to test new products on humans, which produces accurate results, and computer simulations and modelling are used to calculate impacts.
What can I do?
There are many things you can do to help stop animals suffering unnecessarily for us, but here’s a few suggestions.
Pay attention to what you buy
Paying attention to what you buy and opting for cruelty-free products is a great way to help. Products marked as vegan will be cruelty-free as will those marked with the Leaping Bunny logo, but you can find more suggestions on our AnimalKind page – Top 10 ethical beauty brands.

Spread the word
The more people that know about the cruelty involved in cosmetic testing on animals, the better. Spread the word and encourage everyone you know to shop ethically.
